Sacred Art - Room IV

Leaning on the wall on the left of the entrance is a mural painting of the XV century depicting la Crocifissione (the Crucifixion). Since it was in a worrisome condition of deterioration, due to the unfavourable climatic conditions, the fresco was removed from the chapel of the Palazzo Ducale di Tagliacozzo in 1979 and placed on a reinforced plastic support. The painting reveals a good qualitative level reproposing the well-known Evangelic episode with an essential and dramatic language. The room hosts three oil paintings “su tavola” (on wooden boards) depicting la Resurrezione di Cristo, la Vergine Assunta, and Cristo Portacroce concerning the XVI century all from the church of S.Angelo di Celano.

A small wooden sculpture from the church of S.Maria in Valle Porclaneta is of modest workmanship and portrays an unidentifiable saint. The exhibition of the room includes a valuable tabernacle of the XVI century, in carved and painted wood, which was originally placed in the church of S.Maria della Vittoria of Scurcola Marsicana. The work of art, in which the famous wooden statue of the Madonna della Vittoria (beginning of the XIV century) was kept in, has the shape of a tall narrow closet with two doors on which six scenes related to the life of Christ are painted on them; the high pictorial quality of the unknown artist is evident and the clear infusion of Umbrian art is recognized.
